California Trip: Part I - The Flights

Yesterday, we returned from our vacation to visit my sister, Laura and her family in California.  Of course, we had a wonderful time and we hated to leave.  Over the next week, I hope to blog about different aspects of our trip.  I am not sure how many parts there will be, but I think I can cover everything in four posts.  I just don't feel I would give our trip its due in one post.  We had such an amazing time.

Last time we went to California there was an issue with our plane and our connecting flight.  When I booked our flight back in March, I kept this in mind.  I wanted to make sure if there was delay in our first flight we could still make our connecting flight in Atlanta.  Our layover was supposed to be 2 1/2 hrs.  Then in May, the airline changed our layover to 48 minutes.  I started to worry.

Sure enough when we arrived to check-in on Monday we had to see a Delta agent.  Our flight was delayed due to weather in Atlanta.  At this point we had a few choices.  Reschedule for Tuesday or go to Atlanta and hope to still make our connecting flight.  Our layover changed from 48 minutes to 15 minutes.  It wasn't a hard decision since I was traveling with the girls.  We rescheduled for Tuesday.  Drea was very upset because she was really excited to go.  None the less, there was nothing they could do or guarantee.  So we returned to Fairmont.

However, after that little hiccup, everything else went as planned.  We were rerouted to Minnesota, instead of Atlanta and arrived in San Diego at 1:30pm on Tuesday.  The rest of our flights and layovers went off without any problems.

Here's our first plane, on Tuesday in Pittsburgh

Charlotte excited about riding on the plane

During our layover in Minnesota the kids played in the play area
The play area had a plane, baggage cart, and...

Drea still staying busy
Once we arrived in San Diego we met up with my sister and her family and headed for lunch.  Then into the car and off to their home in Imperial.  The drive takes about 2 hours, which gave the kids time to talk to one an another and get to know each other.  Their was some shyness from each of them to begin with, but before long they were talking and sharing their technology.  Fast forward to the end of our week and we were back at the airport.  I thought it might be a good idea to take the red eye back to the east coast.  We wound up renting a hotel in San Diego on Saturday and spending the entire day on Sunday in San Diego.  Our flight was at 11pm west coast time.  We enjoyed our day and arrived at the airport at 9pm.  At 930, this was Charlotte...

...passed out in the terminal

The entire time Drea wanted to ride in a plane that had tv.  She finally got her wish.

And Charlotte still slept.
I hope you check back later this week for the best parts of our vacation;  swimming, Sea World, and spending time with family.

Spring Dance Recital

Last weekend, the girls had their Spring Dance Recital.  Like always, they are always excited and ready to perform.  There was some technical difficulties with the lighting and sound at the beginning of the recital, but eventually it was corrected.  It was a nice way to put the finishing touches on a long year of dancing.

Posing...of course

I think Charlotte looks so old in this picture

Charlotte Graduates

I know.  Really.  Charlotte is finally finished with preschool.  I am not going to lie, I am happy on several fronts that Charlotte is finished with preschool.  Obviously, the money. It will be a big savings, but I am sure that money will go somewhere else.  It will save me 45 minutes every morning.  Charlotte will be going to my school, so we will not have to go across town every morning.

The reality is we have been going to Kids R Special for 8 years.  First, Drea and then Charlotte.  Our kids have grown up there.  They have learned a lot and made some really good friends.  And even though there are reasons to be happy, there are reasons to be sad.  Their teachers have been wonderful.  Their friends, amazing.  And they have learned so much.  So, really after all is said and done, I will miss seeing the familiar faces and the friends that they have made.   Time moves on, and Preschool graduation will make way to other graduations.  Thank you Kids R Special for playing such an important role in both girls' lives.

Hashbrown King

Apparently, being the hashbrown King comes with other perks.  Who knew?  This is what I came home too today after school...

This should say everything is better with bacon...I shouldn't be criticized for knowing this!

No one has asked, but I would take orders

Again, not my fault that I realize how great bacon is

This sign was at the top of my driveway...there also was one at the intersection
before you get to my house.  It is quite possible there is more up and down the connector.

Jersey was a fan of the bacon on the fence...

...so was Bailey

Hashbrown Casserole Cook-off

Today, during our Memorial Day cookout, my friends and I set up a hashbrown casserole cook-off.  The rules were pretty simple.  Make your best casserole and vote on your favorite other than yours.  The most votes wins.  Besides having the satisfaction of winning, the winner gets first choice to make hashbrown casserole at any and all cooking functions for the next year.

Here are the contestants' cassroles

Spring Break in Jersey

The girls and I packed our bags, loaded up the dogs and headed to New Jersey for Spring Break.  It is the first time in a long time that I was giddy, yes, giddy to be home.  The girls were snuggled up in the back seat watching a movie and I was listening to the Phillies win 1-0 on the radio, which definitely added to the giddiness.   Then, as the game concluded and we got closer to my Mom's house this came on the radio...

It was only too fitting and a sign that I was home and a perfect beginning to our visit.  There was one sad bit of news, really devastating, but more on that later.  For now check out some of the pictures of our adventure to the Garden State.

Friday Night we had a campfire, complete with roasting hot-dogs and smores
The girls dyed Easter Eggs on Saturday morning

On Saturday afternoon we headed to Ocean City
The girls had to play in the water, which by the way, was too cold!
They don't seemed phased at all

Early I mentioned while on the trip we had some devastating news.  Here it is...

This is a picture of pizza from my favorite pizza place, Preps Pizza in Ocean City.  Part of the reason we, okay I am lying, the reason we went to Ocean City was to get Preps.  It never dawned on me it could be closed during the off season, but as we walked closer to the restaurant I noticed it was closed.  Heartache, I know, but it gets worse.  On the front of the closed doors was a sign...I figured it said, closed until June, sadly, it was a for sale sign.  We had to settle for Manco & Manco pizza.  It was still good, but not the same.  Regardless, we had a wonderful visit and I was glad to be home.

Death

I guess you can call me weird, strange, perhaps morbid, but talking about death growing up was something pretty common.  I suppose maybe it has to do with having a sibling, parent, grandparents, aunts and uncles' die in my life time.  My father was a pastor and was called on to speak at funerals, so maybe that had something to do with it.  Or maybe believing that this life here on earth is temporary before moving onto Heaven.  Whatever the reason, I talk about it.  Obviously, I am not ready for my death yet, but I am not scared of it either.  Most of the time when I do talk about death, it is in a joking manner.

A few years ago, my mom was staying at the house with me.  One morning I woke up before her.  As I walked by her room it was really quiet.  Too quiet.  I shook it off as me being paranoid and went about making coffee.  Next, I fed the dogs and let them out because they were barking and carrying on.  I figure that probably woke my mom.  Still silence.  At this point I was slightly concerned, so I went into the room to investigate.  I called her name, nothing.  I said it again, nothing.  I stood over top of her trying to figure out if she was breathing and I still couldn't tell.  Finally, I got really close to her and said her name.  With that she woke up.  I was relieved and we had a good laugh about it.  She shared a story with me about being younger and sharing the bed with my great grand mother.  She  wondered if Grammy was breathing, as well.  Weird, right?

So it should come as no surprise that the girls talk about death in a joking manner as well.  Not to long ago we were playing tickle fight and I decided to pretend I was dead.  Usually, when I do this Charlotte freaks out.  However, I guess she has learned that Daddy likes to joke around about it.  This time Charlotte did not get upset, instead she screams, "Daddy is dead, I'm in charge!"

Sometimes Drea talks about growing up and getting married and having kids of her own.  I assume it is a girl thing, but I know I thought about those things too, just not at eight years old.  Anyway, whenever she mentions getting married and having kids, I always tell her she needs to wait until she is thirty-five.  Her typical response is, "Daddy, you will be dead."  Last time she said this, I told her I would not be dead, let's figure out how old I would be.  We calculated my age to be sixty-seven, when she is thirty-five.  Drea then says, "See you will be dead."  I went on to explain to her, that her grandparents are all around that age, Nunnie, Papaw, and Noni are all in their sixties.  She says, "Yes, almost dead!"

See what I mean, morbid.
